Buffalo totem represents prayer, strength and abundance

Those who have a Buffalo totem must walk a sacred path, honoring every walk of life. You will achieve nothing without the aid of the Great Spirit and you must be humble enough to ask for assistance and then be grateful for those gifts.

A Buffalo totem will seek to help you establish a deep connection to Mother Earth and it will ask you to help the endangered species of our planet. He will bring you strength of character and an independent spirit.

Buffalo is the totem of abundance. Buffalo medicine is prayer, gratitude and praise. Praying for the needs of all creatures, for harmony and giving praise for the gifts you have already received.

You are strong, persistent, powerful, tenacious and are unaware of the impact you usually have on others. You avoid flight when confronted with conflict and do not understand the need to act in self protection against the destructiveness of others actions or conduct.

Some may consider you slow, and interpret your stare or gaze to be empty, but the fact is, you miss little. You are docile and frequently allow yourself to go along with the crowd for self protection and to partake within the social, group.

Sometimes you may become lost in the herd instinct. You are slow to anger but will not be deterred if your course has been set. You are a kind nurturing, and giving person. So strong is your respect for life, its goodness and its sacredness that you refuse to set healthy boundaries.

In business, sometimes the Buffalo spirit will show that things are so good that people begin to waste time and effort, getting by by coasting on the last quarters good reports. You must take strong action to preserve your market share.

In love you are too busy trying to take care of everyone except yourself. You are trying to make everyone happy and may be losing yourself to the collective demands of family, friends, your work, mate and children.

You want peace and harmony so much that you may avoid serious issues involving your partners commitment to the labor, duties and responsibilities of raising a home having a family or building a love relationship.

In a spiritual sense you live in other realms that few mortals will ever know or glimpse. Like it or not, you are a divine messenger. You must define this message and purpose for your life, otherwise you’ll surely be sacrificed by it, to it, and for it.

Clearly see if you are a caretaker or nurturer, that in the end you may determine the quality of your health, life and your death.

buffalo and calfBuffalo is considered by many tribes as a symbol of abundance: its meat fed the people, skins were used for clothing and covering, bones and sinew were crafted as survival tools, hooves were converted into glue.

According to Lakota tradition, White Buffalo Calf Woman gave them the Sacred Pipe, promising abundance as long as they prayed to the Great Spirit and honored All Their Relations, that is, all other creations of nature.

Buffalo’s Medicine symbolizes an honor, reverence or special love for all the things that Mother Earth offers her children. It is also knowing that abundance is present when all relations are honored as sacred, and when gratitude is expressed to every living part of Creation.

Buffalo signals a moment to reconnect with the meaning of life and the value of peace, to praise the gifts you already have, and to recognize and honor the sacredness in all paths, though they may be different than yours.

The buffalo represents force and strength. If you should dream of a buffalo, you are being given a sign that you are supported by spirit in the accomplishment of a new project. If you often envision a buffalo, you are being given confidence in your ability to achieve your goals.

If you have chosen or accepted the buffalo as your totem animal, you have an ally that will encourage you to spend a great deal of time out-of-doors. Your buffalo totem will seek to help you establish a solid connection with the Earth Mother and will endeavor to teach you ways in which you may assist the many endangered creatures to avoid extinction.

Your spirit helper will bring you strength of character and build within you an independent spirit that will prize freedom above all things.

picture of white buffaloIf a white buffalo appears, it is a sign that prayers have been heard, or a period of wealth is about to begin.

The buffalo is a symbol of abundance and manifestation. Their large heads represent intelligence of a higher order and their strong bodies ground them to the earth. They are the uniting force between the mundane and the divine and hold the teachings of right action joined with prayer.

Both the bulls and the cows have horns as well as humped shoulders. Horns grow out of the head and extend to the sky indicating a connection with a higher intelligence. Humps are often symbolic of stored energy locked within the body.

The buffalo’s humps are located at the shoulders. In man the shoulders hold our personal energy which expresses itself through our hands. Whatever we touch or hold onto is connected to the energy stored in the shoulders.

Shoulders carry responsibility or joy. What we carry within is manifested outwardly.  The buffalo teaches us how to eliminate our burdens by directing our energy in a balanced way.

When defending against danger, the cows will form a defensive circle around the calves and the bulls will form a circle around the cows. This symbolizes the buffalo’s mutual respect for one another as well as their protective instincts to defend and honor life.

To the Plains Indians it was a symbol of sacred life and abundance. It gave the gift of life to others by sacrificing its own. It provided meat for food and hides for clothing and shelter.

When tribes prepared for a buffalo hunt prayers of gratitude were offered up to great spirit. After the hunt ceremonies were performed that honored the buffalo’s spirit. Without the aid of buffalo these tribes would not have survived the harsh winters.

Buffalo’s can be unpredictable and dangerous when provoked. Those with this totem need to remember to see the good in all things and not let their frustration store up inside them. Tai Chi or martial arts would be of benefit on a daily basis.

The buffalo reminds us to give thanks for what we have, to respect all life forms and to honor the integrity of our own divine essence. It is a symbol of equality, sacrifice and service and can show us how to live in a state of understanding, acceptance and joy.

It helps us release our self pity and awakens abundance within our consciousness.  Buffalo is a powerful medicine to have and serves as a stepping stone towards healing our imperfections and reconnecting with Mother Earth and Father Sky.
