Hybrid / Designer Breeds

Hybrid / Designer Breeds

The word ‘Hybrid’, when referring to genetics means, the offspring of genetically dissimilar parents or stock.

A hybrid dog is not a BREED, it is a hybrid, which means it is a mix of more than one purebred dog.Hybrid breeds are either two breeds recognized by the AKC that are now being bred together to develop a new breed, or the term hybrid can mean a mating with a domestic dog and a wild animal, such as the wolf (wolf dogs) or coyote (coy dogs).

When two unregistered dogs cross-breed, we often call them mutts, usually when the parentage of one animal in the breeding is unknown.Another term that is becoming popular for mixed-breed dogs is the designer dog.

The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. But, be aware that even littermates from the same litter can exhibit a wide range of characteristics, depending on which mix of genes were passed by each of their parents to each individual pup, which can and probably will be different for each pup.
