More than 100 wolves killed in ariel hunts in AlaskaMore than 100 wolves have been killed so far this season, including a pack of wolves that had been studied for decades. The Board of Game meets in March to consider a number of additional proposals calling for the expansion of wolf and bear killing.
Defenders of Wildlife needs your help on a critical wildlife issue in the state of Alaska. The Alaska Board of Game will meet March 4-13, 2005 in Anchorage, Alaska to decide on numerous proposals that will increase the killing of wolves and bears in Alaska.
As an American, your voice on proposals that affect wildlife from federal lands can make a huge difference. For example, the National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are trying to stop aerial wolf killing on federal park and refuge lands.
They have submitted proposals to the Alaska Board of Game asking that aerial wolf killing programs in interior Alaska explicitly exclude Lake Clark National Park and Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge.
These are America's wolves, and should not be subject to the short-sighted management schemes of Alaska's Governor Frank Murkowski and Board of Game who want to artificially increase moose populations for sporthunters.
What's more, there are proposals that will allow hunting of bears from Katmai National Park, and the world-famous McNeil River Bear Sanctuary. These bears are viewed by hundreds of people each year, and as a result, would make easy targets for trophy hunters. They also hold enormous value scientifically, and have been continuously studied for decades.
Last fall, Defenders of Wildlife members helped stop aerial wolf gunning on federal lands in eastern Alaska. We have also been effective over the years in keeping the bears of McNeil River and Katmai safe from trophy hunters. With your help, we can do it again!
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
The Alaska Board of Game is accepting written comments on proposals until February 18th, 2005. Please personalize the sample letter and e-mail it to savealaskawolves@defenders.org.
Our Alaska office will compile all comments and ensure that they are received by the Board of Game by the comment deadline. You will note there is space for you to personalize your letter. If you have ever visited Alaska or plan to visit Alaska, or have seen bears and wolves in the wild, please let them know. Your personal experience is important and can really make a difference in how your comments are perceived.
Please take a few minutes to let the Alaska Board of Game know that the slaughter of America's wolves and bears is unacceptable. Thanks so much for your support.
