Have you ever heard a wolf howl? The wolf howl is a hauntingly beautiful sound you aren't likely to forget, that has an almost musical quality about it.
That is one of the ways wolves communicate with their voices. In spite of popularly held myths, wolves don't howl at the moon. They will howl any time of the day but are most often heard in the evening because that is when the pack is most active. Wolves howl to find other pack members, to let "outside" wolves know where their territory is, or to get the pack excited and ready to hunt. Sometimes, it seems as if wolves howl just for the fun of it.
Wolves bark to warn other pack members of danger or to challenge an enemy, but don't bark as their primary means of communication, in the sense that dogs do. The bark is reserved for extreme situations. Wolves often growl in dominance disputes or other kinds of "fights." Wolves make a squeaking noise to call the pups, and the pups' mother will whimper to calm them down.
A wolf howl may range from a half-second in duration to about eleven seconds. A lone wolf may howl by itself, or a howling session can be a community affair. Communal howls often begin with a few sharp barks by a few pack members, followed by a low howl that builds to a louder group howl.
Wolves seldom stay on the same note while howling, but rather shift pitch to achieve almost harmonic effect. This is probably due to the individual voices of each wolf, much as some humans sing saprano, while others sing alto or baritone.

Sounds of the Earth: Wolves GREAT SOUNDS OF WOLVES IN THE PACK AND INDIVIDUAL CALLS Wonderful sounds of a wolf pack not bothered by man. Individual wolves calling to others and the pack welcoming home the travelers. The wolf calls bring to mind the hard life, the cold that the wolves endure, but that they have their pack and are not alone. The sounds are so great that one can almost see the activites of the wolves. This CD is unique and top notch because it 1) has no man-made musical or voice effects, 2)has natural sounds found in the habitat of the wolf. This CD takes you to the wolves, so to speak. In doing so, you feel the lonely cries, the active nature of the wolf pack, and a connection to nature. A great CD for anyone interested in sounds of nature in the wild and well worth the money for any wolf lover.
Wolf Talk HOW WOLVES REALLY SOUND
Wolves sound very eerie, not only howling but yipping as well, and when it is all heard together in the pack, it doesn't sound like what most expect. There are more wolf sounds on this cd than there are on others that claim to be revolving around the wolf. This one actually stuck to the title. Overall, a good representation of wolf sounds.
A Day with the Wolves FREE DOWNLOADS OF TWO SONGS FROM THIS CD Captivating, relaxing flute songs blend with real wolf sounds that were recorded by Monty Sloan at Wolf Park. TopWaya has really succeeded in giving us 'a day with the wolves'. Excellent title! From the first song, "Calling Out", where he is calling out to the wolves, to the final song, "DreamTime", I found myself picturing the wolves throughout their day. My final word on this cd: WOW!
