Herding Breeds

Herding Breeds

The Herding Breed Group, created in 1983, is the newest AKC classification of dog breeds. Herding dogs were formerly members of the Working Group of dogs. All breeds in this class share the instinct and ability to control the movement of other animals.

The vast majority of Herding dogs, formerly bred for these traits in working with livestock on farms, are now primarily house pets.  In general, these intelligent dogs make excellent companions and respond well to training exercises.
